Moving in together felt like the natural next step. After three years with Liora, I thought we were finally building a future. I always knew she had once dated my old roommate, Damian, but that was long before me.
I never gave it much thought. I didn’t meet her son until our second year. Sweet kid.
I was nervous, but he warmed up to me quickly. By the third year, I felt ready to step into a bigger role in his life. I assumed that’s what Liora wanted too.
Then came the shock: Damian was the father. My former roommate. That stung, but what hurt more was realizing Damian had never once mentioned being a dad.
No photos, no calls, no support—nothing. I started thinking it through. Damian only worked part-time at a gas station.
No way he was paying rent, groceries, and child support. So I asked Liora straight-up if he was contributing anything. She shrugged.
“No. I chose to raise him alone.”
I admired her independence, but I also saw how much she was struggling financially. I suggested she go after Damian for at least the bare minimum—child support.
Her son deserved that. Instead of listening, she snapped at me. Told me to “mind my business.” Said I had no right to interfere in how she raised her child.
That’s when I lost it. If we were moving in together, wasn’t her child my business too? I told her she needed to do better for him.
She called me controlling. I called her careless. And I walked out.
I didn’t go far—just back to my own place across town. But it was quiet there. Too quiet.
I realized I missed the kid more than I missed her. That hit harder than I expected. Weeks passed.
I gave her space, but she never reached out. Then one night, I bumped into Damian at a gas station. I asked him point-blank if he ever saw his son.
He said no—that Liora had told him she didn’t want him involved. That she didn’t need him. So he stayed away.
I didn’t know what to believe. Liora never told me that. But would it surprise me if she had?
Not really. Still, I told him: “That’s your son. You should’ve tried.”
His words stuck with me: “She said he’d be better off without me.”
Months later, I ran into Liora and her son at the park.
The boy ran straight to me, shouting “Cap’n!” like no time had passed. Liora looked tired, worn down. She admitted she’d lost her job and was struggling.
We sat and talked. She confessed she’d been angry at me, but maybe I was right to bring it up. She just didn’t want to look like a failure.
I told her she needed to talk to Damian—for her son’s sake. A week later, she called. Nervous, shaky.
She’d spoken to Damian. He wanted to meet his son. She was terrified he’d disappoint him, but I told her to let the boy decide.
That first meeting was awkward, but it happened. Damian brought a toy truck, asked about school, and the boy smiled. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a start.
