Woman Follows 5-Year-Old Girl Who Takes Leftovers from Her Grocery Store Every Day

A grocery store owner grows suspicious of a well-dressed little girl who shows up daily to collect leftovers. When she decides to follow her, what she uncovers breaks her heart. Kimberly Cook was busy restocking shelves one morning when she first noticed the child.

Every day, around the same time, the girl would come to the store’s charity bin — a place where people left food packets for the homeless — and hurriedly fill a large bag before running off. At first, Kimberly assumed the girl came with someone, but she soon realized she was always alone. What puzzled her most was that the child, who couldn’t have been more than five years old, was neatly dressed — hardly the picture of someone living on leftovers.

One day, Kimberly decided to approach her. “Hello there! My name’s Kimberly.

I see you here often. What’s your name?”

The little girl froze, looking frightened. Then she whispered, “May I take some food from here?

Please?”

“Of course you can, sweetie. But I was just—” Before Kimberly could finish, the child turned away and began hurriedly stuffing food into her bag. Kimberly sighed.

“If you need help, I could help you. Are you home alone? Are your parents sick?”

The girl acted as though she hadn’t heard.

“Sorry, I have to go,” she said, clutching her bag and running off. Something felt wrong. The next day, Kimberly kept watch.

Sure enough, the girl returned, collecting food just as before. Once she left, Kimberly asked her store manager to take over and quietly followed her by car, careful to keep a distance. She watched as the girl strolled through the streets, swinging her bag cheerfully, then turned down an alley.

Kimberly waited until she reached the end before driving in. The child disappeared into a narrow side street where a car couldn’t go, so Kimberly got out and followed on foot. The neighborhood was bleak — rows of crumbling, neglected houses.

The girl walked all the way to the edge of the area, then crossed a field until she reached an abandoned garage. Why here? Kimberly wondered.

Why would such a young girl come to a place like this? Just then, the garage door creaked open. Two small figures emerged: a little boy, even younger than the girl, and a frail-looking dog.

Kimberly approached carefully. But when the girl spotted her, she grabbed the boy’s hand, and together they ran inside, pulling the shutter down. “I’m not here to hurt you,” Kimberly called gently.

“I just want to help. That’s why I’m waiting outside. I won’t force my way in — I don’t want to scare you, okay?”

A pause.

Then the girl’s voice: “No, we’re not coming out. You’ll call the police. Please go.”

“Police?” Kimberly was startled.

“No, I won’t. I promise. Will you come out now?”

After a long silence, the girl finally stepped outside.

“Where are the boy and the dog?” Kimberly asked softly. Tears welled in her eyes. “Please don’t take them away.

I’m Jason’s big sister. Mommy told me to look after him. My name is Stacey.

Our dog’s name is Timmy.”

“Don’t cry, Stacey. I’ll help you. Where are your parents?”

“Mommy and Daddy went to the angel,” she said, wiping her face.
