I thought my marriage was unshakable until one weekend, when I returned home early from visiting my sister. As I walked in, I noticed an overpowering smell of bleach and followed it to the basement. There, I found my husband, Tom, frantically scrubbing a large, dark stain on the floor.
His startled reaction and nervous explanation — that it was just spilled wine — didn’t sit right with me, especially when I saw a tightly tied trash bag and a rolled-up rug nearby. The whole scene filled me with unease. The next day, Tom left for work early, and when I checked the basement again, I discovered he had locked the door — something he had never done before.
