My Daughter and I Have a ‘Code Word’ — What Happened Yesterday Proved Why Every Family Needs One

When I was a little girl, my mother taught me something I never forgot: the power of a secret code word. It wasn’t meant to be fun or silly, though at the time I thought it was. She explained it as a way for me to reach out for help if I was in trouble, but couldn’t say so directly.

Our word back then was “lantern.” It seemed random enough to work, yet easy enough for me to remember. I never ended up using it, but I grew up with the quiet reassurance that if I ever needed to, I had a way to signal her. Now, decades later, I’m a mother myself.

I’ve tried to take the best of what my mom taught me and pass it on to my daughter, Grace. She’s eight years old, curious, kind, and more perceptive than most adults realize. When she was six, I sat her down and explained the idea of a code word.

I told her it was like a little secret tool we could use, just the two of us. If she ever felt unsafe or wanted to leave somewhere but didn’t feel comfortable saying so, she could slip the word into conversation, and I would know immediately. At first, she thought it was a game, but when I explained more seriously, her eyes grew wide and she nodded, understanding the weight of it.

We tested a few words, but finally settled on “blueberries.” Random, memorable, and unlikely to come up naturally in conversation. She promised she’d only use it if she really meant it. To me, it was just an extra safety net.

I assumed she might use it one day to escape an awkward sleepover, maybe a birthday party where she didn’t feel comfortable. I never imagined how quickly, or how seriously, she would need it. Yesterday started like any other Sunday.

The weather was calm, the air a little crisp as autumn crept in. Grace was spending the weekend with her dad, my ex-husband, David. Our marriage ended three years ago.

It wasn’t a messy divorce, not exactly, but it wasn’t smooth either. We’d both tried to keep things civil for Grace’s sake, though tensions bubbled just under the surface more often than not. David had always been a good father, and despite our differences, I never questioned his ability to take care of her.

Still, I sometimes found myself worrying—partly because I’m a mother, partly because I don’t always trust the people who drift into his life. That evening, as I sat in my kitchen finishing my coffee, my phone rang. David’s name lit up the screen.

My first thought was that something had gone wrong. He rarely called during Grace’s weekends with him. “Hello?” I answered, trying to keep my voice neutral.

“Hey, Julia.” His tone was odd, hesitant, almost rehearsed. “Grace wanted to talk to you. She’s been asking since she got here.”

That struck me as unusual.

Grace normally dove headfirst into her weekends with her dad—parks, art projects, little adventures. She didn’t usually call me unless something was wrong. “Sure, put her on,” I said.

A moment later, her cheerful little voice came through. “Hi, Mom!”

Something about it made my stomach tighten. She sounded bright, but there was a thread of nervousness under her words, like a violin string pulled too tight.

The story doesn’t end here — it continues on the next page.
