“Hello there,” Alexander said softly, meeting Emily’s tear-filled eyes. “My name is Alexander. What’s yours?”
“E-Emily,” she replied hesitantly, clutching her teddy bear even tighter.
Alexander gave her a reassuring smile. “Emily, it looks like you could use a friend. Would you like to come with me?”
Emily looked back at the closed door of the house that no longer welcomed her.

He took her shopping for new clothes, enrolled her in school, and every evening, they shared stories over dinner. “If you’ll have me,” he said, his voice thick with emotion. Emily threw her arms around him, her heart full for the first time since losing her father. “Yes, I want you to be.”
