While I was in the hospital, my mother-in-law decided to celebrate her birthday at our house, She invited forty guests — and left the dirty dishes and the entire mess for me to clean up: I was furious and decided to take revenge

When I was rushed to the hospital with suspected appendicitis, I never imagined it would end with surgery and three days on IVs and painkillers. After the operation, the doctor strictly warned me: no physical effort, no lifting, no standing for too long — otherwise, the stitches could tear. I just dreamed of coming home, lying down in my own bed, and finally resting.

But what I saw when I opened the door left me frozen in place. Dirty footprints all over the floor, crumpled napkins in the living room, empty bottles, overturned glasses. In the kitchen — a mountain of unwashed dishes, dried food scraps on the table, a sticky floor, and the smell of alcohol everywhere.

It looked as if a hurricane had swept through the house. I stood there in disbelief until I noticed a card on the fridge: “Happy Birthday, Mom!” And then everything became clear. While I was in the hospital, my mother-in-law had decided to throw her birthday party in our home.

She invited forty guests, had a celebration at our expense, and then simply left, abandoning the chaos behind her. I felt anger rising inside me. I knew yelling was pointless — she would just say “it’s not a big deal” or “we’re family.” So I decided to handle it differently.

I was going to teach her a lesson. And that’s exactly what I did First, I photographed everything — every plate, every footprint, every bottle. I turned on the timestamp on the photos to show exactly when it all happened.

Then I went to the neighbors: one woman said she had heard loud music and seen cars arriving at our house. Another said she saw my mother-in-law greeting guests at the gate. That was enough evidence for me.

I called a cleaning company and ordered a full deep cleaning — carpets, windows, kitchen, everything. When it was done, I kept all the receipts and added the costs of my medication and the taxi — because after all that stress, my stitches had started to hurt again. Then I sat down and wrote a short, formal letter:

“Dear [mother-in-law’s name],
While I was in the hospital recovering from surgery, a party was held in my home to celebrate your birthday.

After the event, the house was left in an unacceptable condition. I am enclosing photos as proof, along with copies of the receipts for cleaning, dry cleaning, and medication. The total expenses amount to 62,700 rubles.

I kindly ask that you reimburse this amount within ten calendar days. Sincerely, [my name].”

I printed everything — the photos, receipts, and letter — and sent it by registered mail with delivery confirmation. I left a second copy on my husband’s desk.

No explanation. Three days later, my mother-in-law called. Her voice was trembling with anger.

She shouted that I was “disgracing the family,” that “you don’t do that to relatives.”

I calmly replied, “You don’t do that to relatives when you throw a party in their house after they’ve had surgery. I’m simply asking for compensation.” Then I hung up. A week later, a bank transfer arrived — the exact amount I had written in the letter.

The story doesn’t end here — it continues on the next page.
