During our family vacation, my son Eric, who is twenty years old, requested that he be allowed to accompany his new girlfriend, Jessica. My curiosity led me to accept to meet her. My husband was immediately smitten by her stunning appearance and charming personality, but as a mother, I couldn’t ignore the feeling that something was amiss with her.
Jessica did not appear to have any familiarity with Eric after they had been dating for three months. Her eyes blinked and she said, “Basketball?” when I asked her if she had ever seen him play basketball, which had been his lifetime obsession. We have never discussed the topic before.
She was completely unaware of his choice of major, and she disregarded any activity that he recommended. In the meantime, I was searching through his suitcase for sunscreen when I came upon a velvet box that contained a diamond necklace. Eric was unable to purchase it because it was so steeply priced.
Even though my stomach was churning, I did not speak. On the final day, Eric’s phone that was sitting on the counter buzzed while he and Jessica were in the pool. “Add an additional $500 to our deal,” I froze just as I stared at the page.
I was in a state of disbelief as I glanced at the letter, and I could feel a mixture of astonishment and wrath rising up inside of me. I was filled with questions; what exactly was going on? Who was the person who received that message’s other side?
Could Jessica not be who she appeared to be? I waited for Eric to come back since I was so intent on finding out the truth about the situation. At the time that they returned, I took Eric aside and pretended that I wanted to have a conversation with him about the trip.
Can we have a little conversation, Eric? “Something is bothering me,” I responded, making an effort to maintain a level headed tone. It’s fine, Mom; what’s going on?” As he asked, he appeared perplexed.
As I did so, I inhaled deeply. Inadvertently, I came upon a text message on your phone. There were references to money and a transaction.
What exactly is going on, Eric? What is going on with you and Jessica? Is everything fine?
The color left Eric’s face. Following a brief pause, he let out a sigh and then turned his gaze away. I was hoping that you wouldn’t find out in this manner.
Despite appearances, Jessica is not truly my girlfriend. In reality, she is a self-employed actor. A paid actress, you ask?
Although my voice was hardly audible, I repeated it. It’s true, Mom. As of late, I have been experiencing a great deal of pressure, as my father is always expressing his pride in my previous relationships and praising the fact that they have all been very successful.
Due to the fact that I did not wish to let him down once more, I decided to pay Jessica to accompany me and… just make things appear good. I was completely at a loss for words. I was devastated to learn that my son believed he needed to hire someone in order to make a good impression on us.
The words “Oh, Eric” came out of my mouth as I reached out to embrace him. “There is no need for you to carry out this action. We love you not because of who you are with but because of who you are.
