My MIL changed my alarm before my final exam to “teach me a lesson.” Oh, she regretted it. I’m 23F, married to my husband (26M) for a year, and I’m in my last year of university. My program is extremely expensive, and these exams are the most important of my life—my entire career depends on them.
My mother-in-law, Lydia, knows this. She knew I’d be buried in finals these weeks… but she chose that exact time to “surprise us” with a visit. From the moment she arrived, she constantly demanded my time—dinners, family visits, shopping.
I tried being polite, but I had to refuse most invitations because I needed to study. That’s when her true colors showed. One evening, she cornered me in the kitchen:
Lydia (snapping): “WHY ARE YOU WASTING YOUR TIME WITH THIS UNIVERSITY NONSENSE?
YOU’RE A WIFE NOW. SOON, YOU’LL BE A MOTHER. IT’S TIME YOU START FOCUSING ON GIVING MY SON A FAMILY INSTEAD OF CHASING POINTLESS DEGREES.”
Me (firmly): “With all due respect, this isn’t pointless.
This degree is my future.”
Lydia (coldly): “Your future is MY SON. You’ll understand someday.”
Then came the breaking point. Three weeks after her arrival, she suddenly decided to throw herself a “late birthday dinner”—on the night before my biggest exam.
Her actual birthday had been three weeks ago, and I had already given her a beautiful knitting set that she loved. I politely asked if we could celebrate after my exam. Me: “Please, Lydia.
Can we do it tomorrow evening? This test decides my entire final grade.”
Lydia (mocking): “Oh, poor busy little student. You always have excuses.
Fine, don’t come—but don’t expect me to forget this.”
I thought she was just being dramatic. I had no idea what she was planning. The next morning, I woke up late—very late.
My alarm, which I always set for 6:30 a.m., was somehow changed to 9:30 a.m. I panicked, grabbed my phone, and ran to the living room—only to find Lydia sipping her coffee, smiling smugly. Me (shaking): “DID YOU TOUCH MY ALARM?!”
Lydia (calmly): “I told you—you had time for my dinner.
Now I took my time BACK.”
Me (shocked): “ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!”
I raced to campus, but I was too late. They wouldn’t let me into the exam hall. When I confronted her later, she didn’t even flinch.
She kept acting as if it was ME who’d hurt her feelings and traumatized her by “yelling.”
So, I waited. Patiently. To get back at her.
When I got home, my MIL Lydia smirked: “ONE LITTLE TEST WON’T MATTER WHEN YOU HAVE BABIES TO WORRY ABOUT.”
So two nights later, I RESET every clock in the house three hours ahead. At midnight, her alarm went off. By 1 a.m.
she was racing to the airport, convinced her flight was in an hour. By 1:15, my phone blew up with her furious voicemails:
“YOU DID THIS, DIDN’T YOU?!” I slept like a baby. When I finally replied at 8 a.m., all I wrote was: “Oh no!
I thought you liked surprises… after how you helped me with mine.” Lydia hasn’t crossed me since.
