One night, as I walked past my 10-year-old son’s room, I overheard him mumbling in his sleep: “What if Mom finds out we’re not really going to soccer practice?”
My heart stopped. He was referring to Derek, my husband—his stepfather—not his late biological dad. Derek had always insisted on taking Evan to practice.

I held my son as we cried together, slowly peeling back the layers of betrayal. I filed for sole custody and submitted all evidence. Derek lost all rights.
