I’ve been dating Mike, a divorced man with two kids, for five years. Once, we came to “his mom’s house.” My heart sank when I noticed pictures of Mike and his ex-wife taken on their wedding day. Then, I noticed one more photo that put me into a huge shock.
It wasn’t of him and his ex—it was of me. A picture I didn’t even know existed. I was sitting at a café years ago, reading a book, completely unaware that anyone had taken my photo.
It was framed on the mantelpiece, right next to the family portraits. I froze. Why would this be here?
When I asked Mike about it, he looked embarrassed and then smiled softly. He explained that years before we ever met, his mother had seen me at that same café. She’d been struck by something in my expression—peaceful, kind, as if I belonged in their family somehow.
She had taken the photo (with permission, as Mike later explained, though I had long forgotten) and kept it. Years later, when Mike introduced me to her as his girlfriend, she was stunned. The woman from the photo—the one she had felt some strange connection to—was me.
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. What felt at first like an invasion turned into something oddly beautiful. His mother told me she believed it was destiny, that sometimes life gives us little signs long before we understand them.
Looking at that photo again, I realized maybe she was right. Sometimes, the past leaves us breadcrumbs to lead us where we’re meant to be.
