My spouse surprised me with a romantic weekend on our anniversary. Everything was fine until I saw a wrapped box with my name in his luggage. My heart raced as I carefully untied the ribbon and opened the box to find a dazzling necklace with a heart-shaped pendant etched with our wedding date.
As I clutched the pendant, its cool surface lightly touching my palm, my heart raced. It was a wonderful present that showed his knowledge of me. I put on the dainty necklace and couldn’t wait to thank him for such a lovely surprise.
I joined him in the living room, where a blazing fire warmed us from the fall chill, filled with gladness. My husband Toby was preparing a picnic with strawberries, dark chocolate, and sparkling cider. He inquired, “What do you think, Alice?” with enthusiasm.
“Did you check inside your bag yet?” he asked slyly. I teased him back, smiling brightly, claiming I hadn’t noticed anything special. “Toby, the room service menu is great and the view is beautiful!” Playing along, I joked.
He laughed and inclined his head knowingly. I know you peeked—you couldn’t resist, right? I laughed along with his contagious laughs.
The weekend started well as we reminisced about our best memories from the past. We joked about how I knocked over a pile of romance novels on him at a bookstore and met him. Toby told job stories and mentioned a fresh investment possibility amidst laughing.
“It might be risky, but sometimes the best opportunities come when you embrace what scares you,” he pondered. I adored him for his adventurous spirit, among other things. His tales always made routine events appear remarkable.
Full of love and connection, the evening flew by. I saw a shooting star outside our window as night fell. Softly prodding Toby, I gasped.
We made a wish without saying it. In quiet, I felt lucky and appreciative for every moment with him that night. I felt life couldn’t get nicer until Toby got a call early the next morning.
While listening on the other end, worry crept across his face. Toby seemed distant and uneasy after the call. “What’s wrong?” I asked, shaking with worry.
He hesitated before responding, “It’s nothing too serious, just some work stuff I need to figure out.”
His hesitation to share bothered me, but I trusted him to open up when ready. We spent the day wandering the countryside, but something was off. Later, as we watched the sunset, Toby looked at me with newfound purpose.
“Alice, there’s something I’ve been meaning to discuss with you,” he began. Under the bright orange sky, he admitted to taking a major job-related financial risk. “If it doesn’t work out, it might affect us, but I really believe in the potential,” he said nervously.
I was surprised by his sincerity. I struggled with worry and love, alternating between hesitating and supporting. “Everyone’s dreams come with risks,” I reassured him, recalling his earlier thoughts.
“We’ll be fine as long as we face them together.”
We carefully assessed our situation and made plans throughout the weekend, blending caution and optimism. Even with the twist, I felt closer to Toby. It seemed like we revisited portions of our adventure.
